Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country with the potential of plants that have been used for generations as traditional medicine. The use of traditional medicine is considered safer than the use of chemical drugs. One of the plants that can be used as herbal medicine is kenikir plant. This plant, which is a family of Asteraceae, is thought to be used as a traditional medicine for bacterial infections. Pneumonia, wounds, and endocarditis are some types of infections produced by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the Gram positive bacteria and is the main pathogenic bacteria in humans. Treatment therapy for bacterial infections is applied with the use of antibiotics, which currently have caused many health problems such as antibiotic resistance. So that research is needed to support the development of herbal medicines as antibacterial drugs. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of n-hexane, dichloromethane, and aquadestilata fractions from kenikir leaves against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Kenikir leaf extract was extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol as solvent, and fractionated using n-hexane, dichloromethane and aquadestilata as solvents. The antibacterial activity of kenikir leaf fraction was tested using the disc diffusion method with a concentration of 10%. Statistical analysis using Anova one way test to determine whether there is an effect of kenikir leaf fraction on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that the dichloromethane fraction had the most active antibacterial activity in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with an average inhibition zone of 21.67 mm ± 0.764. Keywords: Kenikir leaf, Staphylococcus aureus, fractionation, disc diffusion.
