Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries in the world that has a diversity of plants, there are about 7,000 species that have medicinal properties. One of these plants is Coriandrum Sativum L, which is called coriander. Coriander has various secondary metabolites that can be used as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus can cause disease if it has reached the number of 10,6 per gram. In recent decades, Staphylococcus aureus infections have continued to increase. In Indonesia, the prevalence reached 28% of all cases of Staphylococcus aureus infection in 2011. Treatment of infection usually uses antibiotics, but the current use is irrational, causing the emergence of resistant bacterial strains so that other alternatives are needed such as the use of antibacterial active ingredients from medicinal plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the extract and fraction of coriander seeds against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Experimental research was used in this study. Samples of coriander seeds were extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol followed by fractionation using three solvents, namely aquadestilata, dichloromethane, and n- hexane. Antibacterial activity test of extracts and fractions of coriander seeds using disc diffusion method with a concentration of 5%. The results of the antibacterial activity test between the extract and the coriander seed fraction showed that the n- hexane fraction was the most potent fraction in inhibiting staphylococcus aureus bacteria with an average bland zone of 22.33±0.76. Keywords: Antibacterial, Coriandrum sativum L, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, fractionation
