Abstract

Kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) contain active compounds, namely phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that function as antibacterial. These active compounds can interfere with the permeability of cell membranes, interfere with the formation of peptidoglycan or cell walls, denature proteins and inactivate enzymes in bacterial cells. Kenikir leaf extract has been shown to produce an inhibitory zone against the bacterium Bacillus cereus which causes food poisoning. Bacillus cereus according to some scientists is a spore-forming, aerobic to facultative, Gram-positive, motile rod that can be separated from different variations. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of kenikir (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) leaf extract against Bacillus cereus in vitro with various extract concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%. Tetracycline HCl 0.25% is used as K+ because its mechanism of action is the same as that of alkaloids. The inhibition zone of the sample was categorized in the resulting diameter range, including 21 mm including the very strong category, 11-20 mm including the strong category, 6-10 mm including the medium category, and <5 mm including the weak category. The test results showed the average inhibition zone of kenikir leaf extract at various concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively 17.33±1.25 mm, 17.16±1,04 mm, and 17.33±1,04 mm. Kenikir leaf extract has antibacterial activity in the category of strong inhibitory power, with the optimum inhibitory concentration at a concentration of 30%.
