Abstract

Research on antibacterial activity of water apple leaf extract (Syzygium aqueum) and gel preparation of water leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria have been conducted in this research. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of water apple leaf extract and gel from water apple leaf extract against S. aureus. Water apple leaf was extracted by soxhletation method with 70% ethanol as solvent. The preparation gel is made from the best concentration of water apple leaf extract against S. aureus. In phytochemistry test, water apple leaf containes flavonoid, tannin, and terpenoid compound. Water apple leaf extract of 25% concentration has the highest inhibitory ability that is 12.50 mm in inhibition zone diameter. Besides, other concentrations of 50 % and 75 % water apple extract exhibited inhibition zone diameter of 12.50 mm and 10.20 mm, respectively. Gel of 25% water leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with mean inhibition zone diameter 16.80 mm. Evaluation of the gel preparation includes organoleptic test, pH, homogeneity, dispersion, adhesion, and protection showed good result as well as spesific requirements for gel.
