Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn) contains flavonoids , tannins and alkaloids which acts as an antibacterial. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity both of turmeric extract and cream from turmeric extract against Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction method applied in this research is soxhlet extraction using ethanol 95% as solvent. We varied concentration of turmeric extract such as 45%, 55%, 65%, and 75%. The test of antibacterial activity of turmeric extract with various concentrations against Stapylococcus aureus was performed by diffusion method. The results of this study showed that the extract turmeric has the optimum activity in 55% turmeric extract with inhibition zone 12.1 mm. While other concentrations of turmeric extract 45%, 65%, and 75% exhibited inhibition zone 11.8 mm, 11.5 mm, and 11.3 mm, respectively. Control positive gentamicin gave inhibition zone of 21.6 mm which more potent than turmeric extract. Cream with 55% turmeric extract generated inhibition zone of 19.1 mm which is higher than its previous 55% turmeric extract. The evaluation of cream with various parameters such as organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreading, adhesion, and protection parameter fulfills the standard of cream.
