Abstract

Papaya plant has scientific name as Carica papaya L, which has efficacy as a drug especially for papaya seeds. Papaya seeds have potential as a natural antibacterial. The aim of this research is to invesigate the antibacterial effect both of papaya seed extract and cream formulated by papaya seed extract against Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction of papaya seed was performed by soxhlet method with 70% ethanol as solvent. The antibacterial activity test was conducted by diffusion method. We use positive gentamicin as positive control and DMSO 5% as control negative. The optimum concentration of papaya seed extract that has high inhibition zone diameter was applied to establish a cream. The result phytochemistry test showed that papaya seed extract contains flavonoid, alkaloid, tanin, terpenoid. The antibacterial activity test generated inhibition zone diameter of papaya seed extract with concentration of 25%, 55%, and 85% were 14.6 mm, 24.6 mm, and 21 mm, respectively. It indicates that papaya seed extracts have strong category of actibacterial activity. We used 55% papaya seed extract to produce cream. Cream exhibited inhibition zone diameter of 24 mm which has strong activity as well as gentamicin cream. The evaluation of cream such as organoleptic, homogeniety, spreading power, adhesive power, and protection test confoms with spesific standard of cream.
