Abstract

Melinjo plant (Gnetii gnemon Folium) is one of the plants found in Indonesia whose utilization has not been maximally explored. Information on antimicrobial activity of melinjo leaves is not known.The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus from melinjo leaf extract, and to formulate gel from melinjo leaf extract as antibacterial that fulfill the requirements of physical stability. The research is experimental method. Melinjo leaf was extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol as solvent. The antibacterial activity test was performed by using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus. We applied various concentration of melinjo leaf extract such as 50%, 60%, 70% and 80%. The results showed that 80% melinjo leaf extract generated antibacterial activity with inhibition diameter of 13.08 mm in strong category. Besides, other concentrations of melinjo leaf extract for 50%, 60%, and 70% exhibited inhibition zone diameter of 11.5 mm, 12 mm, 12,3 mm respectively. Gel containing 80% melinjo leaf extract showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus in strong category with inhibition zone diameter of 16.91 mm. While, positif control clindamycin gave inhibition zone diameter of 28 mm which is stronger antibacterial activity relative to gel of melinjo extract. The evaluation of gel from melinjo extract was stable while the adhesion test did not meet the specified parameter. Keyword: Melinjo leaf, maceration method, antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus
