Abstract

In Indonesia there are many plants that have the potential to be used as traditional medicinal ingredients, one of which is teak (Tectona grandis L.f). Leaves from teak plants have the potential as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus which is a bacterium that causes infection in humans. One option to overcome an infection is to use antibiotics, because Staphylococcus aureus is easily resistant to antibiotics and the many negative effects of long-term antibiotic use, it is necessary to develop antibacterial agents by utilizing antimicrobial active ingredients from medicinal plants. Based on the antibacterial activity of teak leaves, it needs to be developed into a pharmaceutical preparation to increase the ease of use, namely cream. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of cream of teak leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus using the disc diffusion method. The research method used is experimental. Teak leaf samples were extracted using maceration method with 70% ethanol. The positive control used is chloramphenicol cream which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and negative control is a cream base without extract. Teak leaf extract is made into cream preparations with concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 50%. The cream preparations were evaluated including organoleptic test, pH, homogeneity, dispersion, adhesion, and protection for two weeks or fourteen days. Statistical analysis was performed with kolmogorov-smirnov, levene statistics, one way anova and spearman. The results of the antibacterial activity testing showed that the teak leaf extract cream had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. teak leaf extract cream with a concentration of 10%; 30%; and 50% respectively have an average inhibition zone of 11.75 mm; 15.5 mm; and 17.75 mm. Antibacterial activity is thought to originate from the activity of flavonoid compounds, tannins and saponins in teak leaf extract. The teak leaf extract cream has a smaller inhibitory power compared to chloramphenicol cream which has an average inhibition zone of 36 mm. The results of One Way Anova analysis showed a significant difference between treatment groups (p <0.05). Teak leaf extract cream fulfills the requirements of organoleptic test, homogeneity, pH, dispersion, adhesion, and protection power and is stable in a two weeks storage period.
