Abstract
Face whitening cream is a mixture of chemicals and / or other ingredients with the properties of being able to whiten the skin or blot the black spots on the skin. Mercury is one of the active ingredients that is often recommended because mercury ions are thought to inhibit the synthesis of melamine skin pigments in melanocyte cells. According to the Regulation of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency of the Republic of Indonesia number HK.03.01.23.07.11.6662 in 2011 the requirement for mercury (Hg) is not more than 1 mg / kg or 1 mg / L (1 ppm). The purpose of the study was to determine the presence or absence of mercury and determine mercury levels in facial whitening creams sold in the area of the City of Tulungagung Regency. The sample of this study was 5 with a purposive sampling method. Testing the mercury content is done in two stages, namely the first stage qualitatively (color test) and the second stage quantitatively using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 253.7 nm. The results of this study indicate that in the five samples observed there were 4 samples containing mercury, namely the levels in the code A sample of 5.39 ppm; code B 0.93; C code 0 ppm; code D 15.81 and code E 14.22 ppm. So that not all face whitening cream cosmetics in the market meet the requirements set by BPOM. Keywords: mercury, face whitening cream ‘’off lable’, atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
