Abstract
Hydroquinone is an active ingredient that can control uneven pigment production, which functions to reduce or inhibit the formation of skin melanin. But in the long term it can cause damage to organs and also be toxic. This study aims to determine the hydroquinone levels in an off lable whitening lotion in Tulungagung Regency. Five samples analyzed were coded with letters A, B, C, D, and E. The sampling method used was accidental sampling. The hydroquinone analysis in the off lable whitening lotion sample was carried out using Visible Spectrophotometry using an o – phenanthroline color complexion with a wavelength of 510 nm. Based on the research that has been done, the five positive samples contain hydroquinone with a concentration of 43.7 ppm, 34.9 ppm, 12.6 ppm, 26.4 ppm, and 17.9 ppm with a percentage percentage of 0.0272%, 0.0214 %, 0.0066%, 0.0157%, and 0.0101%. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the off lable whitening lotion contains < 2% hydroquinone, which means it is still safe to use.
