Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that is easily found everywhere. It is known as pathogenic and often causes infection. In Jakarta in the period 1986-1993, the incidence of S. aureus infection increased nearly fourfold from 2.5% to 9.4%. Staphylococcus aureus causes various infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, empyema, endocartitis, acne, pyoderma or impetigo. One option to overcome an infection is to use antibiotics, but the use of antibiotics has become a resistance due to improper use. Therefore, there is a need for alternative therapies from plants that have high potential as antibacterial. Beluntas leaves have the potential as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus which is a bacterium that causes infection in humans. Use as a drug it is necessary to form a pharmaceutical preparation, namely gel. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of beluntas leaf extract gel against Staphylococcus aureus using agar diffusion method. The research method used is experimental. Beluntas leaf samples were extracted using the soxhletation method with 70% ethanol. The positive control used is clindamycin gel and negative control is the base gel without extract. Beluntas leaf extract was made into gel preparations with a concentration of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The gel preparations were evaluated including organoleptic test, pH, homogeneity, dispersion, adhesion, and protection for two weeks or fourteen days. Statistical analysis was carried out with kolmogorov-smirnov, levene statistics, One Way Anova and spearman. The results of the antibacterial activity of the beluntas leaf extract gel showed that the beluntas leaf extract gel had antibacterial activity against Staohylococcus aureus. Beluntas leaf extract gel with a concentration of 5%; 10%; and 15% in sequence have an inhibition zone average of 7 ± 0.81 mm; 9.5 ± 0.57 mm; and 13.5 ± 0.57 mm. Antibacterial activity is thought to originate from the activity of flavonoid compounds, tannins and saponins in beluntas leaf extract. Beluntas leaf extract gel has a smaller inhibition compared to Klindamycin gel which has an average inhibition zone of 31.25 ± 1.91 mm. Beluntas leaf extract gel fulfills organoleptic, homogeneous, pH, dispersion, adhesion, and protection and is stable during storage.
