Abstract
In Indonesia, many plants have the potential to be used as traditional medicinal ingredients, one of which is the tamarind plant (Samanea saman (jacq.) Merr). The leaves of the tamarind plant have the potential as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus which is a bacterium that causes skin infections, nasal mycoses, and large intestine in humans. One option for overcoming an infection is to use antibiotics, because Staphylococcus aureus is easily resistant to antibiotics and the many negative effects of long-term antibiotic use, it is necessary to develop an antibacterial agent that is by utilizing antimicrobial active ingredients from medicinal plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of 70% ethanol extract fraction from tamarind leaves (Samanea saman (jacq.) Merr) as an antibacterial Staphylococcus aureus using the disc diffusion method. The research method used is experimental. Trembesi leaf samples were extracted using maceration method with 70% ethanol, followed by aquadest, n- hexane, and ethyl acetate fractionation tests with concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5%. The positive control used was chloramphenicol cream and the negative control was DMSO 2%. Statistical analysis was carried out with Kolmogorov- Smirnov, Levene Statistics, One Way Anova and Spearman. The results of antibacterial activity testing showed that the extract of the tamarind leaf extract had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Trembesi leaf extract fraction with aquadest concentration of 1%; 3%; and 5%, respectively, have an average inhibition zone of 7.2 mm; 10.3 mm; and 17.2 mm. Trembesi leaf extract fraction has a smaller inhibitory power than chloramphenicol cream which has an average inhibition zone of 31.3 mm. One Way Anova analysis results showed a significant difference between treatment groups (p <0.05). The fraction of tamarind leaf extract against antibacterial Staphylococcus aureus fulfilled the requirements at concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5% with positive control of chloramphenicol and negative control of 2% DMSO.
