Abstract

Green betel leaf which contains phenolic chemicals has antimicrobial activity. The concentration of 10% betel leaf extract shows antiseptic activity against Propionibacterium acnesbacteria. Serum preparations are recommended to overcome acne because it has a high concentration of active ingredients so that it is absorbed faster by the skin. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of serum preparations against Propionibacterium acnes. Serum preparations are made in 3 formulas with gel base concentrations namely FI (CMC-Na 2%), FII (CMC-Na 3%), FIII (CMC-Na 4%), positive control (green betel leaf extract) and negative control (formula without extract). Evaluation of serum preparations conducted for 28 days includes organoleptic testing, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesion, pH and viscosity. Serum preparations were tested antibacterial against Propionibacterium acnes on days 0 and 28. The analysis was conducted statistically using One Way Annova with a confidence level of 95% to observe the influence of base concentration on serum stability. The results showed serum preparations met good physical stability criteria based on a 28-day stability test. The antibacterial activity of the three formulations has a tasteability of >10mm which belongs to the range of strong properties. Keywords : green betel leaf, serum, CMC-Na, Propionibacterium acnes
