Abstract

Water apple leaf (Syzyqium aqueum) is kind of the plant that has antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of water apple leaves extract and water apple gel as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The leaves sample is extracted by maseration method with 70% ethanol solvent. The gel preparation is made by the best MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) of water apple leaf extract. The evaluation of preparation includes organoleptic test, pH, homogenity, dispersion, adhesion, and protection. One-Way Anova is used as statistical analysis method. The results of water apple experiment showed that water apple extract has activity toward Staphylococcus aureus. The concentration of 25% water apple leaf extract exhibited the best response with average inhibit zone diameter of 20.33 mm. The antibacterial activity is expected from the active compound of flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids. The gel of water apple leaf extract 25 % has antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus with average inhibit zone diameter of 14.17 mm.
