Abstract
The uses of antibiotics tend to increase respiratory tract infections and resistance, so utilizing of natural materials is considered. Natural ingredients have been useful and have been empirically used as antibacterial such water apple leaf. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of water apple leaf extract and water apple cream as antibacterial toward Staphylococcus aureus. Water apple leaves were extracted using 70% ethanol by maceration method. The extraction result was made by variation of concentration followed by testing in antibacterial activity using paper disc diffusion method. The result was analyzed by one way ANOVA. Then, the best concentration of extracts which has high inhibition diameter was formulated to be a cream. The cream was tested with various parameters such as organoleptis, homogenity, pH, dispersion, and adhesive. The results showed that water apple leaf extract contains tannin, flavonoid, terpenoid have ability to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with optimum concentration of 25% which has inhibition zone diameter of 20.8 mm. The statistic analysis of water apple leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus showed there is not significant difference between 50 % and 75% of water apple leaf extract. The cream with 25% apple leaf extract had inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus of 21.16 mm. Keywords: Syzygium aqueum, antibacterial, cream, Staphylococcus aureus
