Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are bacteria that are often found on human hands. Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and UTIs are examples of diseases caused by these bacteria. The content of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins in miana and kemuning leaf extracts can be used as antibacterial. Using hand soap is one way to prevent diseases caused by bacteria. Liquid soap is made through the process of saponification of oil with an alkaline solution (KOH). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of KOH concentration on the physical stability of liquid soap and to test its antibacterial activity. The research method used is experimental. Miana and kemuning leaf samples were extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol. The concentration of the active substance used is 10:10 and the variation of the concentration of KOH FI(5%); FII(5.5%); FIII(6%). The preparation was tested for physical stability for 28 days including organoleptic, pH, viscosity, water content, free alkali content, free fatty acid content and high foam. Antibacterial activity test using disc diffusion method. The results showed that KOH had an effect on the physical stability of liquid soap. The higher the concentration of KOH, the higher the free alkali content, pH, viscosity and decreased free fatty acid levels. FI(5%) resulted in a strong inhibition zone of 11.16 mm in Staphylococcus aureus and 14.00 mm in Escherichia coli. Keywords: bacteria, miana leaf, kemuning leaf, potassium hydroxide, liquid soap
